The standardized solution is expected to look substantially like 
draft-ietf-krb-wg-kerberos-set-passwd-05.txt.  The Kerberos working group 
recently completed a last call on that document, and it is currently 
undergoing revision to address comments before it can move forward (in 
fact, -06 has been submitted but has not yet appeared in the 
internet-drafts repository).  It's not too late to submit comments (please 
send them to ietf-krb-wg at anl.gov).
